The description of Charm King
More of a saga than Candy Crush Saga has, Charm King is a real fairytale packed into a Match-3 game. Colorful and bright, it also features some narrative that keeps your attention on the game, eager to discover more.
It’s hard to invent something me in Match-3 Genre, but the developers of Charm King seem to succeed. It’s not about gameplay; it’s all about a narrative.
As for gameplay, it’s a regular Match-3 game. You need to move different elements (beans, hearts, teddy bears, and more) on the field to make a combination of three or more identical elements. Then the combination pops up, freeing space for more elements falling from above. Each level requires you collect a certain number of certain elements, depending on its complexity.
Well, we’ve ween lots of these games, King’s Candy Crush Saga being the most advertised and probably the most popular among them. What Charm King offers instead is the narrative as the method of getting you involved. As you succeed with the first level, you receive a scroll that unfolds into a comic book fairytale, written with irony and unexpected twists. Of course, you’re eager to know what happens next; but it takes more scrolls to follow the storyline, so you need to play more to win more scrolls. The postmodern irony of the tales makes them amusing for adults as well as for kids.
To save your progress or get extras, you can connect your Facebook account to the game. Your friends playing it will see you and compete with you, or send you gifts.
While the Match 3 part of the game looks quite ordinary, with vivid colors and some animation, the real fun is watching the graphic tales you access with your scrolls. They are drawn pretty well, with funny details, expressive characters, and interactive dialogs. Texts are as important as pictures for enjoying the game, and the tales are full of jolly humor.
Though the core is under 100 MB, the tales are downloaded additionally as you access them, so don’t be surprised if Charm King takes more and more memory of your device. But it’s definitely worth this, as you unfold episode by episode.
General Impressions 10/10
It’s really something fresh in the world of Match-3 games, trying to copy the leaders. Though in controls and in powerups King Charm does too, it brings some fresh wind, as stories you unfold with scrolls are the best kind of reward possible in a free game.
For any level, you can be rewarded with a maximum of three stars. That makes the game quite replayable, as the levels you didn’t get through well can be replayed, and your results improved.
The game is free to play, but if you want to speed up your pace and turn the pages of the tales faster, you may need to invest some real money in it. Anyway, it’s not necessary.
If you want something fresh in Match 3 genre, Charm King is quite an option. You can try it, and don’t neglect the tales it offers in reward, as it’s what makes Charm King unique. Maybe you’ll prefer it to any other Match 3, and it’s deserved.06 Feb 2019
